Shem Creek

One of Mount Pleasant's defining waterfront districts.

People kayak, paddleboard and boat alongside shrimp trawlers while waterfront restaurants and gathering places line both sides of the creek.

Shem Creek remains both a working waterfront and one of Mount Pleasant's most recognizable places to dine, gather and get out on the water. Dolphin sightings are a familiar part of the experience as they move through the creek and surrounding harbor waters.

Patriots Point

Beyond the USS Yorktown.

Patriots Point brings together Charleston Harbor, maritime history, sailing, sports, boating and some of Mount Pleasant's most dramatic views of downtown Charleston.

It is one of the few places in town where a museum, marina, waterfront recreation and professional sporting events all occupy the same general area.

Patriots Point began taking shape in the 1970s. The USS Yorktown arrived in Charleston Harbor in 1975, and the naval and maritime museum opened in January 1976. The campus later expanded to include the USS Laffey, the Medal of Honor Museum and The Vietnam Experience.

Memorial Waterfront Park sits at the Mount Pleasant base of the Ravenel Bridge, bringing together harbor views, recreation and some of the town's largest community gatherings.

The park includes a 1,250-foot fishing pier, waterfront lawns, playgrounds, a splash pad and space for festivals, concerts and annual traditions overlooking Charleston Harbor.

Boone Hall

A historic property that remains part of everyday Mount Pleasant.

Founded in 1681, Boone Hall has remained a working agricultural property for more than three centuries.

The Avenue of Oaks was begun in 1743, while the Colonial Revival mansion seen today was built in 1936. Tours and exhibits interpret the property's agricultural history, Gullah culture and the lives of the enslaved people whose labor shaped Boone Hall. The grounds also remain known for seasonal festivals and community traditions.

Life Along the Coast

American Indian communities lived along the East Cooper waterways thousands of years ago. Shell middens and large shell rings preserve traces of food, pottery and everyday coastal life.

BEFORE 1680

The Sewee & Wando

The Sewee and Wando peoples lived throughout the East Cooper area before Europeans arrived. Their history remains visible in familiar local names including the Wando River, Seewee and Hobcaw.

European Settlement Begins

European settlement began July 6, 1680 under Captain Florentia O'Sullivan. Early maps referred to portions of the area as North Point and Old Woman's Point.

1770

Hibben's Ferry

Andrew Hibben opened ferry service from Haddrell's Point to Charleston, creating an important harbor connection generations before bridges crossed the Cooper River.

1800s

Mount Pleasant Takes Shape

Greenwich, the village of Mount Pleasant, Hilliardsville, the Hibben Ferry area and Lucasville gradually came together as the town expanded.

2005

The Modern Connection

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge opened in 2005, creating the modern connection between Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston that now defines the harbor skyline.
